We are the government’s centre of expertise for infrastructure and major projects, reporting to the Cabinet Office and HM Treasury. We support the successful delivery of all types of infrastructure and major projects: ranging from railways, schools, hospitals and housing, to defence, IT and major transformation programmes. The IPA works with government and industry to ensure infrastructure and major projects are delivered efficiently and effectively, and to improve performance over time. Our purpose is to continuously improve the way infrastructure and major projects are delivered, in order to support government priorities and improve people’s lives. Our organisation was formed on 1 January 2016 when it brought together Infrastructure UK (IUK) and the Major Projects Authority (MPA).
The Commission aims to the be the UK’s most credible, forward thinking and influential voice on infrastructure policy and strategy. Credible, through producing reports and analysis of the highest quality, written in plain English, independent of government and all vested interests, and making clear recommendations based on rigorous evidence; and developing an evidence base which sets a gold standard in its quality and breadth. Forward-thinking, by taking a strategic approach, which links long-term priorities with short-term action and considers infrastructure as a system, not as a collection of silos; maintaining an international perspective and engaging closely with leading edge expertise, and open to new approaches and ideas. And influential, by building broad support for its analysis and recommendations, working across society, government, parliament and industry; producing work which is objective, fair and transparent; looking for deliverable solutions; and following up on recommendations.
